FISHING IN THE CAMBRIDGE AREA

This is a guide to some of the waters around Cambridge, showing the club permits required. It must however be noted an Environmental Agency Licence is COMPULSORY for persons aged 12 or over,.
This is only a rough guide and we can not be held responsible for any errors made. The true situation should be established by the angler to avoid any conflicts with the owners.

THE RIVER CAM
Cantelupe Farm, from the area under the M11 towards Byrons Pool.  Controlled by the Cambridge University Sports and social Club. Permits available from the club.

GRANCHESTER MEADOWS
From a point near the Red Lion pub, down stream all through Common lands to Cambridge, no permit required on common land. Can produce some good catches, known for quality chub in some areas.
Although no motor craft uses this water, during the summer months there could be considerable numbers of punts and canoes making use of this water.

The River Camb around the city
Some good stretches of water are available, a permit is not required for common lands.
Fishing is NOT allowed from College property.
Further down river at
Jesus Lock through Midsummer Common and Stourbridge Common, as far as the Pike and Eel Pub. The entire stretch is common land, but is controlled by Cambridge Fish Preservation A.S. Permits £1 per year residents only.  (juniors free).
The fishing can be good for roach, chub, dace etc. trout and carp have been landed here at a point near the old gas works roadside, but you may need a dropnet!

The River Cam from near the Pike and Eel pub Chesterton, downstream along the tow path, through Baitsbite Lock to Clayhithe Bridge. Water controlled by Cambridge Fish Preservation and Angling Society. Permits and Day tickets available from Cooper & Sons.  It is wise to purchase a permit before fishing as a penalty surcharge is imposed on the bank. The cost of permits are £16 adult, Junior & OAP £7, Day tickets £3 in advance.
The club also manages the common lands  (see above).
The sport along the Cam can be very good holding almost all species of fish.

The Preservation also control the
Hundred Foot River from Hermitage, Earith to Sutton Gault ( tidal River): the Ouse opposite the Fish and Duck pub, for just over one mile towards Ely; the reach and Burwell Lodes; River Lark, Prickwillow Road to Folly Drove; Borrow Pit Sutton Gault; River Cam Lammas Lane ( 100 yards ); and Nethergrove Lake, Sportsmans Pit and a stretch of the Ouse at Great Barford also the ARC Pits Block Fen Mepal and many other waters.

Baitsbite Lock area, above and below the lock sign posted W.A.C., also at Upware, Humphreys Wash and Wests wash. The club also has fishing rights to Swaffam Bulbeck Lode ( a cautious approach required to secure some good sport ).

Leland water is owned by this club and is for full life members only, however a day permit is available to members only from Beecrofts Tackle.
There is a small pit for JUNIOR members only, known as Hatleys Pit, situated near Landbeach.
Permits are available from Cooper & Sons.  Adult members £15, OAP's & Juniors £5.  Day permits £3 ( a surcharge is made for on the bank day tickets ).

River Cam controlled by Cambridge Albion Angling Society
River Cam at Wicken, Dimmocks Cote to Upware and downstream towards the Fish & Duck pub. Permits Adults £20, Ladies, OAP's and Juniors £10  Day tickets £3 all available from Cooper & Sons.
This club also controls a stretch of the Hundred Foot from Sutton Gault to Ox Willow, the Old West River at Strettham Bridge and Gravel Farm, along with the Old Bedford River from Earith to Welches Dam. This river is boat free and holds most species of fish, a good cover of lily pads,providing specimen tench, roach etc. A very good water for pike. Subject to flooding during heavy rain.
